Introduction

Dubrovnik is a small city with an enormous backyard. Within two hours you’ve got a Bosnian old town, a Montenegrin fjord-like bay, a wine peninsula, a national-park island, and three more islands — plus a nature reserve ten minutes offshore. The trick is picking the right ones: some need passports, some need early ferries, and one (Korčula) is honestly better as an overnight. This guide ranks the eight day trips from Dubrovnik by what they deliver, with 2026 prices, travel times, and border-crossing practicalities. Borderline picks are flagged, not hidden. For the city itself, see our guide to things to do in Dubrovnik.

Schnellauswahl

• Easiest win: Lokrum Island — 10–15 min ferry, €30 round trip, peacocks and the salt lake.
• Best boat day: Elaphiti Islands — the 4-hour Blue Cave & Šunj Beach tour (4.9★) beats the full-day cruises.
• Best food & wine day: Ston & Pelješac — oysters pulled from the bay, fortress walls, Plavac Mali reds; no border crossing.
• Best cross-border day: Mostar & Kravice Waterfalls — 4.9★ tours from $52, passport required.
• Most dramatic: Kotor Bay, Montenegro — the fjord-like bay and old town, but budget 2–4 hours for borders in summer.

1. Lokrum Island

The day trip you do first, because it’s ten minutes away. The official ferry leaves Dubrovnik’s Old Town Port for Portoč Cove every ~30 minutes from 9:00 AM in season; the crossing is 10–15 minutes, and one ticket (€30 adult / €10 student / €5 child 7–18 in 2026) covers the crossing and island entry. On the island: the Mrtvo More (“Dead Sea”) salt lagoon for calm swimming (rocky entries — bring rubber shoes), free-roaming peacocks, the ruined Benedictine monastery with the original Game of Thrones Iron Throne, the botanical garden, and Fort Royal at 96 m for the panorama. Take the first ferry — boats fill fast in July–August. Allow 3–5 hours; pack food and water (island cafés are notoriously overpriced). Open April–October only; ferries cancel in strong wind.

2. Elaphiti Islands (Koločep, Lopud, Šipan)

Three inhabited islands, three personalities: Koločep (car-free, closest), Lopud (Šunj — the rare sandy beach, ~20 min walk or golf-cart shuttle from the harbor), Šipan (largest, quietest, olive-oil estates and slow lunches). Two ways to do it: the organized cruise or the DIY public ferry. The headline pick is the 4-hour Blue Cave & Šunj Beach boat tour — 4.9★ across ~2,500 GetYourGuide reviews, from ~$62 — which beats the 8-hour cruises on both rating and time efficiency. The DIY route: Jadrolinija Line 807 from Gruž port (not the Old Town port), €3.40–5.40 one-way in 2026 — catch the 9:30 AM sailing, because midday frequency is sparse and Sundays run only twice. Check availability For more swimming spots, see the best beaches near Dubrovnik.

3. Cavtat

The gentle half-day: a charming waterfront town ~30 minutes south by bus or seasonal boat. The boat is the experience — a scenic 30-minute sail past Lokrum and the Mlini coast (€10–14 one-way, May–October, weather permitting) — while the Libertas bus 10 is cheaper and more frequent (€2–4). In Cavtat: the 7-km pine-shaded promenade around the Rat peninsula, the Račić Mausoleum (Ivan Meštrović’s first architectural work, hilltop views), the Vlaho Bukovac House museum, and a quieter swim than anything near Dubrovnik’s Old Town. Comfortable half day (4–5 hours); check the return boat time when you arrive, because frequencies are thin. [VERIFY 2027 SCHEDULES/FARES]

4. Ston & Pelješac — Oysters and Wine

The best food-and-wine day out of Dubrovnik, and the easiest logistics: ~1 hour each way, no border crossing since the Pelješac Bridge opened in 2022. Ston has Europe’s longest fortress walls (~5.5 km, €10 entry, allow 1–1.5 hours — steep in places) plus the oldest still-operating saltworks in the Mediterranean. Then Mali Ston Bay: a small boat ride to a family-run oyster farm, where European oysters and mussels are pulled from the water in front of you and served with local white wine. Then a Pelješac winery for Plavac Mali and Dingač reds — Croatia’s prestige red-wine peninsula. The benchmark tour: 5.0★ across 120 GetYourGuide reviews, from ~$150 with hotel pickup, ~4–6 hours. Check availability

5. Mostar & Kravice Waterfalls (Bosnia & Herzegovina)

The classic cross-border day: ~2–2.5 hours each way through the Neretva valley to Mostar’s rebuilt 16th-century Stari Most (UNESCO, destroyed 1993, reconstructed 2004), the Kujundžiluk old bazaar, and the Turkish House — plus the Kravice waterfalls bundled into nearly every tour (~25 m horseshoe cascades, swim possible in summer). Top picks: the 11-hour tour at 4.9★/866 revies from $52, or the semi-private version at 4.9★/~3,300 reviews from ~$129. Practicalities:>: valid passport required (original, not a copy; EU citizens may use a national ID). Bosnia is outside the EU/Schengen, uses the convertible mark (pegged 1 EUR ≈ 1.96 BAM), and is cheap — ćevapi ~€4, beer ~€2. Border waits are usually minutes but can hit an hour in summer; guides handle passports without passengers leaving the bus. Kravice entry ~€10 + €3 tourist tax, cash only. Check availability

6. Kotor Bay (Montenegro)

The most dramatic day trip and the most demanding: a fjord-like bay ringed by mountains, the walled old town of Kotor, Perast, and the island church of Our Lady of the Rocks. ~2 hours from Dubrovnik each way, but summer border queues at Debeli Brijeg run 60–90 minutes per direction — this is a 10–12 hour day, of which 2–4 hours can be transit and borders. Leave early; tour coaches depart ~6:30–7:00 AM to beat the queue. Top pick: the 11-hour Kotor/Perast/boat-ride day trip, 4.9★ across 268 Viator reviews. In Kotor: the old town plus the walls climb (1,350+ steps, €15, allow 1–1.5 hours — [VERIFY]). Montenegro uses the euro, so no currency exchange. Passport required (original); self-drivers need Green Card insurance. Modest dress for the island church. Check availability

7. Mljet Island — National Park

The nature pick: a full day on Croatia’s greenest island, built around the national park’s two saltwater lakes (Veliko and Malo Jezero). Getting there: catamarans from Gruž port — Krilo to Pomena (~1h15, ~€24–30 each way) is the useful arrival, ~20 minutes’ walk to the park entrance; TP Line to Sobra is cheaper but 30 km from the park. Park entry ~€25–30/adult in summer [VERIFY against official NP Mljet price list] covers the lakes, trails, and the solar-boat crossing to St. Mary’s islet with its 12th-century Benedictine monastery. Cycle the lakes (regular bike ~€20), swim in the clear water, kayak if the budget stretches. The guided small-group speedboat trip runs 4.8★/~320 reviews, from ~$116–139 (park entry not included — reviewers flag this). DIY works if you catch the early catamaran and mind the return sailing; book morning departures ahead in July–August. Check availability

8. Korčula — the honest framing

Korčula town is a gem — compact walled medieval town, Marco Polo house (alleged birthplace; frame carefully), St. Mark’s Cathedral, and nearby Lumbarda’s Grk wine vineyards. But it’s ~2 hours each way by catamaran, leaving 4–5 hours on the island: enough for the old town and a long lunch, not beaches or a wine circuit. No Korčula day tour currently clears the 4.8★ bar — the DIY catamaran (TP Line from ~€10–17, Krilo ~€25–34) is the recommendation. Honest advice: Korčula works as a day trip, but it’s better as an overnight or a stop on a Dubrovnik→Split itinerary. If you go for the day: first catamaran out, last one back, old town only. FAQs

Do I need a passport for Mostar or Kotor?
Yes — carry it. Croatia is EU + Schengen; Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro are outside both, with real border checks each way. EU citizens may use a national ID card.

Can I do Kotor and Mostar in one day?
Not realistically — opposite directions, 2–3 hours each way per leg, four border queues in a day. Two separate day trips.

Which day trip is best with kids?
Elaphiti (short rides, calm beaches) or nearby Lokrum/Cavtat. Mostar and Kotor mean 2–3 hours each way plus border waits — fine for older kids, hard for small ones.

How far in advance should I book tours in summer?
Small-group speedboats sell out days ahead in July/August — book 3–7 days out. Catamaran seats are usually fine day-before, but morning departures to Mljet/Korčula fill in August. For the best months overall, see the best time to visit Dubrovnik.

Can I visit Mljet and Korčula in one day?
No — timings don’t allow a park visit plus an old-town stop in one day. One island per day.

What if my ferry or tour is cancelled due to weather?
Catamarans can be cancelled in rough seas — most likely spring/autumn. Book with 24h free cancellation, check the timetable the evening before, and keep a mainland backup (Ston, Cavtat) in reserve.
