Renting a Car in Split: The 2027 Guide
CROATIAMUSE / SPLIT
Airport vs downtown pickup, insurance without the upsell, parking zones that actually matter — and the companies worth booking with.
| Preishinweis Company details, ratings and prices were checked on 9 October 2026. Car rental rates move with season, demand and fleet — refresh every commercial detail before the 2027 season goes live. |
Choose by the trip, not by the logo
The useful question is not “which company is cheapest on the landing page.” It is: where are you picking up, how long are you keeping the car, and are you taking it to an island? Answer those three and the choice mostly makes itself.
| Schnelle Antwort Compare the whole market on DiscoverCars first — it takes two minutes and sets your price anchor. Then book direct with a well-reviewed local company if the terms are cleaner, especially for one-way rentals or ferry plans. |

| Booking.com cars | Bundling with a hotel | Airport + downtown | ~€150–250/week |
How this guide picks: published terms, not brochure promises
This is an editorial comparison, not a claim that CroatiaMuse rented from every counter. Each company was checked against its live website and current third-party reviews, and compared on the same decision fields: pickup locations, fleet range, published pricing logic, insurance options, deposit policy, mileage terms, ferry/cross-border rules and cancellation terms.
- Rate clarity: Can you tell what is actually included — or does the headline price quietly exclude the insurance you will end up buying?
- Deposit clarity: Is the credit-card hold stated before you pay, and is it proportionate?
- Mileage clarity: Unlimited, or a daily cap with per-kilometre overage?
- Ferry clarity: Does the company state its island policy in writing, or will you find out at the counter?
- Rating evidence: Do independent reviews back the promises, at volume?
| Was bedeutet “am besten” hier? Best means best matched to a specific rental need among the verified options reviewed for this guide. One company was researched and deliberately left out: Nova Rent a Car shows a mixed 3.7/5 on TripAdvisor with recurring service complaints, which does not clear this guide’s bar. |
Before you book: the five decisions that matter
- Airport or downtown? Split Airport (SPU) sits in Kaštela, about 20 km west of the city. If you are driving straight to the islands, Makarska or the Pelješac peninsula, collect at the airport and skip Split traffic entirely. If you are staying in the old town first, pick up downtown on the day you actually need the car — parking in the centre is expensive and the palace area is pedestrian anyway.
- Basic or all-inclusive rate? The cheap headline rate almost always carries a large excess (€1,000+) and a matching deposit hold. The all-inclusive rate costs more per day but drops the excess toward zero. For a week in high season, do the arithmetic honestly — the “cheap” rate plus the desk upsell usually loses.
- Credit card, not debit. Croatian rental counters overwhelmingly require a credit card in the driver’s name for the deposit hold (typically €500–1,500). Debit cards are routinely refused. Sort this before you fly, not at the counter at midnight.
- Declare your ferry plans. Taking the car to Brač, Hvar or Vis is normal — but most companies require you to declare it when booking, some charge an island fee (typically €15–50), and standard insurance is often void during the actual crossing. This is a five-minute question at booking that prevents a five-hundred-euro argument later.
- One-way or round trip? Split to Dubrovnik is the classic one-way. Local companies often price one-ways more sanely than the global brands — ask directly rather than assuming the drop-off fee on the website is final.
01 COMPARE THE MARKET FIRST
DiscoverCars
The price anchor: see every supplier’s real total before you commit anywhere.
| TYPE Comparison platform | COVERAGE Airport + downtown | BEWERTUNG Supplier-dependent | CANCEL Free, varies by deal |
Warum es einen Platz verdient: This is where you start, not necessarily where you finish. DiscoverCars aggregates the Split suppliers — airport and downtown — with the total price, deposit amount and mileage terms shown before you click through. Two minutes here sets the anchor against which every direct quote gets judged. CroatiaMuse’s own affiliate setup runs through DiscoverCars, so the links below support the site at no cost to you.
| Am besten geeignet für Travelers who want the full market on one screen, and anyone renting in July–August when price gaps between suppliers get wide. |
| Was ist enthalten? • Side-by-side supplier comparison • Deposit and mileage terms upfront • Free cancellation on most deals | Budget- oder Komfortprüfung • You still rent from the supplier • Read the supplier’s ferry terms • Third-party coverage is optional extra |
Abtausch: You are comparing, not renting — the actual contract is with the supplier, so their terms (not DiscoverCars’) govern deposits, ferries and damage. Full coverage bought through the platform (often around €8–10/day [VERIFY]) is usually cheaper than the desk upsell, but check what it actually covers.

02 LAND AND DRIVE
Split Airport Car Rental
Keys at arrivals, coastal road in twenty minutes.
| PICKUP SPU arrivals | DEPOSIT None held [VERIFY] | MILEAGE Unlimited | WEEKLY €50–470 [VERIFY] |
Warum es einen Platz verdient: This is the directory’s own airport pick, and the terms are unusually clean: no deposit held on your card, unlimited mileage, and the price quoted is the price charged. Weekly rates run €50–470 depending on season and car class [VERIFY]. For the classic fly-in, drive-out trip — Plitvice, the islands via ferry, or straight down the coast — it removes the two things travelers dread: the deposit hold and the mileage maths.
| Am besten geeignet für Travelers collecting on arrival and driving beyond Split on day one. |
| Was ist enthalten? • No card deposit hold [VERIFY] • Unlimited mileage • Transparent quoted pricing | Budget- oder Komfortprüfung • Confirm insurance excess level • Declare ferry plans at booking • Small cars suit old towns best |
Abtausch: Book the smallest car you can live with — Dalmatian old towns were not built for SUVs, and neither were their parking spaces.

03 SHORT STAYS, CITY PICKUP
Autovermietung in Split Innenstadt
Skip the airport counters when you only need wheels for a day or two.
| PICKUP Downtown Split | BEWERTUNG 8.4/10 [VERIFY] | MILEAGE Unlimited | WEEKLY €50–650 [VERIFY] |
Warum es einen Platz verdient: The directory’s downtown pick, booked through Booking.com’s car rental arm. Short lines, free cancellation up to 48 hours ahead, unlimited mileage, and an 8.4/10 customer rating [VERIFY]. Weekly totals run €50–650 [VERIFY]. The use case is specific and common: you are staying in Split, you want a car for Krka or the Cetina valley for two days, and you do not want to trek to Kaštela for it.
| Am besten geeignet für City-based travelers needing a car for one to three days. |
| Was ist enthalten? • Free cancellation to 48h ahead • Unlimited mileage • Downtown pickup, no airport trek | Budget- oder Komfortprüfung • Book ahead in high season • Same small-car advice applies • Confirm pickup address before arrival |
Abtausch: Downtown fleets are smaller than airport fleets — in July and August, the car class you want may simply be gone if you book late.
04 THE LOCAL WITH THE CLEANEST TERMS
Uni Rent
One of Croatia’s biggest independents, and unusually straight about what’s included.
| PICKUP Airport + downtown | FLEET 2,000+ cars | BEWERTUNG 4.6–4.8/5 | TERMS All-inclusive options |
Warum es einen Platz verdient: Uni Rent is the local company travelers recommend to each other on forums, which in the Croatian rental market is worth more than any award. Fourteen locations, 2,000+ cars, Split Airport (inside the terminal, across from international arrivals, 07:00–21:00) and downtown Split offices. Reviewers consistently mention the same things: transparent all-inclusive pricing, no mileage limits, no surprise fees for ferries or cross-border, and deposits returned without a fight. The 4.6–4.8/5 ratings hold across hundreds of reviews.
| Am besten geeignet für One-way rentals (they advertise special Split–Dubrovnik–Zagreb one-way rates), ferry trips, and anyone burned by a bad rental experience before. |
| Was ist enthalten? • All-inclusive rate options • No mileage limits • No ferry/cross-border surprise fees | Budget- oder Komfortprüfung • Deposit hold still applies (returned after) • Airport office closes 21:00 • Book direct on uni-rent.net |
Abtausch: Expect a deposit hold around twice the rental price on your credit card (returned after drop-off, per reviewers). And the airport desk closes at 21:00 — land later and you need the downtown office or another supplier.

05 BUNDLING WITH THE HOTEL
Booking.com car rental
One checkout for the room and the wheels.
| TYPE Comparison platform | COVERAGE Airport + downtown | BUNDLE Hotel + car | CANCEL Varies by deal |
Warum es einen Platz verdient: If you booked the hotel on Booking.com — and most Split visitors do — adding the car in the same ecosystem keeps one itinerary, one cancellation flow and one support channel. The directory’s downtown listing already runs through it. Prices track the market; the value is convenience, not discovery.
| Am besten geeignet für Travelers who already live in the Booking.com ecosystem and want one booking record. |
| Was ist enthalten? • Bundled hotel + car checkout • Familiar cancellation flow • Wide supplier coverage | Budget- oder Komfortprüfung • Compare against DiscoverCars first • Supplier terms still apply • Read the excess before paying |
Abtausch: Convenience has a price — spot-check the same dates on DiscoverCars before assuming the bundle is the cheapest way to get that car.
The practical half: Split-specific knowledge
Airport or downtown pickup?
Split Airport (SPU) is in Kaštela, roughly 20 km west of Split — a 25–40 minute drive depending on traffic. Collecting at the airport makes sense when you are driving onward immediately: the A1 north, Trogir (7 km east of the airport), or the ferry ports. It makes no sense when you are spending three days in the palace old town first — you would pay for parking you do not need, in a centre you cannot drive into anyway. Downtown offices (Uni Rent at Šperun 2, among others) let you pick up on the morning you actually leave town.
Insurance and deposits, decoded
- Basic rate (CDW with high excess): the cheap headline. Excess typically €1,000+, matched by a deposit hold on your credit card. Fine if nothing happens; painful if it does.
- All-inclusive / zero-excess rate: costs more per day, drops the excess toward zero and usually shrinks the deposit. For a week in season, price both honestly — the gap is smaller than the upsell at the desk makes it feel.
- The desk upsell: the most expensive insurance you will ever buy is the one sold to a tired traveler at midnight arrivals. Decide your coverage level before you fly.
- Deposit holds: typically €500–1,500 on a credit card in the driver’s name. It is a hold, not a charge — but it reduces your available credit for the trip. Debit cards are routinely refused in Croatia.
- Third-party coverage: full coverage bought through a comparison platform (often around €8–10/day [VERIFY]) is usually far cheaper than the counter price. Read what it covers — and note you may still need to pay the supplier’s excess first and claim it back.
Driving the Dalmatian coast
- Two roads, two philosophies: the A1 motorway is fast, tolled [VERIFY current toll Split–Zagreb] and boring in the best way. The D8 coastal road (Jadranska magistrala) is the reason you rented the car — slower, stunning, and demanding of attention.
- Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on open roads, 110 km/h on expressways, 130 km/h on motorways. Enforcement is real, including average-speed sections.
- The Neum corridor: driving Split to Dubrovnik crosses a ~20 km strip of Bosnia and Herzegovina at Neum. Most rental companies allow transit without fuss; a few charge a cross-border fee (typically up to €40–50 [VERIFY]). Confirm in writing before you go — and carry your passport and the rental documents.
- Fuel: fill up before returning; the INA station near the airport is the usual last stop. Diesel vs petrol mix-ups are the classic expensive mistake — confirm at pickup.
Parking in Split without the fine
The old town is pedestrian — do not attempt to drive to your palace accommodation. Park outside and walk.
| Zone | Area | Summer / Winter | Paid hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zone I (red) | City centre | €1.20 / €0.80 per hour | Mon–Fri 06:30–21:30, Sat 07:00–14:00 | 2-hour maximum; hardest to find space |
| Zone II (blue) | Inner ring | €1.00 / €0.70 per hour | Mon–Fri 07:00–19:00, Sat 07:00–14:00 | Best compromise if you arrive early |
| Zone III (green) | Outer areas | €0.80 / €0.60 per hour | Mon–Fri 07:00–19:00, Sat 07:00–14:00 | Realistic for longer stays |
| Daily tickets | — | €18 / €12 (Zone I) | — | Worth it past ~10 hours |
Checked October 2026 via Split parking sources [VERIFY before 2027 season — tariffs are seasonal]. Pay by SMS to 708211–708214 (zone number appended) with your plate number, no spaces. Fines for missing tickets run €30–60. Guarded lots near the Riva run up to €4/hour. Sundays are free.
Taking the rental car to the islands
- Declare it at booking. Most companies allow island ferries (Brač, Hvar, Vis, Korčula) but require advance notice; undeclared crossings can void your cover.
- Expect an island fee of €15–50 from some suppliers — ask, don’t assume.
- Insurance usually pauses during the crossing itself. Some companies sell crossing-specific cover (~€15–20 [VERIFY]). The car is covered again once you drive off.
- Book the ferry early in season. Jadrolinija vehicle space sells out on summer weekends — reserve online, have the registration details ready (their booking accepts “RENTAL” where the plate isn’t known yet), and be at the port 60 minutes before departure in July–August.
- The simpler alternative: foot-passenger ferries are frequent and cheap; rent a scooter or small car on the island for a day or two. For Brač (rural, spread out) the car earns its keep; for Hvar Town alone, it mostly doesn’t.
The right rental changes with the trip
Nutzen Sie diesen Entscheidungspfad
| 1 | Just want the market price in two minutes? Start on DiscoverCars, then decide whether to book there or direct. |
| 2 | Flying in and driving straight out? Split Airport Car Rental — keys at arrivals, no deposit hold, unlimited mileage. |
| 3 | Staying in Split and need wheels for a day or two? Split Downtown Car Rental — skip the airport trek. |
| 4 | One-way to Dubrovnik, or ferry plans? Uni Rent — transparent terms, no ferry surprise fees, sane one-way rates. |
| 5 | Bundling with the hotel? Booking.com cars — one checkout, but compare the price first. |
Fünf Schecks vor der Zahlung
- Tatsächliche Gesamtsumme: Add the excess-reduction cost, young-driver surcharge (usually under 25), additional-driver fee, one-way fee and any island fee. Compare totals, not headlines.
- Deposit mechanics: Confirm the hold amount, the card type required, and how long refunds take. Screenshot the terms.
- Mileage: Unlimited is standard on the good deals; a 200 km/day cap with overage charges is the trap to spot.
- Ferry and border in writing: Island permission, cross-border (Neum, Montenegro) permission and fees — get it in the booking confirmation, not as a verbal promise.
- Cancellation: Free cancellation to 24–48 hours is the norm on decent rates. Non-refundable prepaid rates only make sense when the dates are fixed.
| Pack for the drive you booked Driving licence (plus International Driving Permit for non-EU licences — cheap insurance), credit card in the driver’s name, phone with the booking confirmation and the rental company’s roadside number, sunglasses, water, and a physical map backup for the island interiors where signal drops. |
Questions travelers ask before renting
Do I need a car in Split itself?
No — and it will mostly annoy you. The old town is pedestrian, parking is expensive and scarce, and everything central is walkable. Rent for the days you leave town, not the days you explore the palace.
Airport or downtown pickup?
Airport if you drive onward on arrival day; downtown if you stay in Split first and rent for specific day trips. The airport is 20 km west in Kaštela — don’t collect there just to park the car for three days.
How much does car rental cost in Split?
Weekly rates on the verified options run roughly €50–650 depending on season and car class [VERIFY]. July–August is the peak; late May, June and September are the value window with the same weather.
Is the deposit really a problem?
It can be: holds of €500–1,500 reduce your available credit for the trip. The no-deposit airport option exists precisely because travelers hate this. Whatever you book, use a credit card in the driver’s name — debit cards are routinely refused.
Can I take the rental car to Hvar or Brač?
Usually yes, but declare it when booking. Expect a possible island fee (€15–50), note that standard insurance often pauses during the crossing, and book the Jadrolinija vehicle ferry early in summer — weekend sailings sell out.
Can I drive to Dubrovnik?
Yes — via the coastal road or A1, crossing the Neum corridor in Bosnia (~20 km). Most companies allow the transit; confirm any cross-border fee in writing and carry your passport and rental documents.
What’s the minimum age?
Typically 21, with a young-driver surcharge under 25 and restrictions on larger car classes. Check the specific supplier — it varies.
Manual or automatic?
Croatia’s rental fleets still skew manual, and automatics cost more and sell out first in season. If you need automatic, book it explicitly and early — “or similar” at the counter rarely works in your favour.
