The vaulted basement halls beneath Diocletian’s Palace — among the best-preserved Roman interiors anywhere, and the floor plan is an exact mirror of the emperor’s apartments that once stood above. There are no great collections here, just the architecture itself: massive stone vaults that served as the palace’s service level. It is the single best ticketed stop inside the palace complex, quieter than the cathedral, and takes about half an hour.
